Now that's what I call an unsubstantiated rumour.

    I like it!

I don't believe it. But I like it!

The article states that the rumour source suggesting increase in 'speeds and feeds'.

Now the MacBook is not a very chunky laptop for it's price/performance so as the rumour is that the speed and ports(?) are going to be increased and the thickness halved, that doesn't sound like a consumer laptop to me anymore. Sounds more like the MacBook Nano.

The MacBook has a plenty fast enough processor for it's intended audience anyhow. To bump it any higher would take it in to Pro realms.

October is too late for university starters isn't it?

There were rumors about a 13" LED backlit panel Apple is sourcing. If the screen could be made really slim, like 2mm instead of the ca. 7mm now and the DVD drive upgraded to a slim drive (the 7mm Panasonic model Toshiba is using in its latest slim laptops) and the HD to a 1.8" drive then perhaps they could almost slash the thickness in half.

But then we're in the rumored sub-notebook territory Apple's supposed to enter.

Maybe the source is legit but gets mixed up in the new slim notebook vs. new MacBook?!?

But maybe they're both one and the same product (i.e. the rumored slim sub-notebook was in fact always a new MacBook model...)

I agree with everything you said there. And yes, it's a little late for schoolers. Most go back in Mid-Late August, and a few others a month later, in September.

You bring up the points I was about to make, the smaller HDs coming out, and the LED displays... It's also possible that there's no official name for the sub-notebook yet, and the source used the term "MacBook" as a generic name for 'Apple/Mac Laptop." I highly doubt this is going to be an update to the current MacBooks, but wouldn't be overly surprised for these to turn out to be basic descriptions for the sub-notebook.

A thinner Macbook would justify the lack of a dedicated graphics card.

But I feel like I'm going to snap it in half...

    Highly doubtful though.

I agree with all of this, but I think Penryn is also needed due to heat dissipation issues.

I think the rumored 13" MBP will be Penryn-based and use a 1.8" hard drive.

I haven't heard anything about a 13" MBP... just people whining about "I want a 13" MBP!!!" when it would be an incredibly stupid business decision on Apple's part... and the sub-notebook that uses flash memory and has no optical drive. But I would tend to agree, Penryn is probably going to need to be used in a slimmer notebook like so.
