I have a relative who occasionally send pictures in winmail.dat format rather than .jpg. She doesn't have a cluse why they come that way. Is there anyway to open that type of file on a Mac?

You have a couple of options.
OMiC is a Mail plugin that allows you to view winmail attachments as if they were were any other Mail attachment.
It's nagware, but cheap.
Or, there's a stand-alone freeware app, Enough, that requires you to drag the winmail attachments on to the app window.

Both work well.
