iPhone erases itself during sync.

I didn't find any other mention of this, so here is a WARNING to iPhone users.

I have my iPhone set up/sync'd with my iMac. It's been working flawlessly and I love it. So, now I'm traveling... with the pBook. (To save space, i don't have my iTunes library on the pBook.)



I figured... it's an iPod, right?... I'll just plug it into the pBook, and I'll be able to access the phone's music from iTunes on the pBook!... Well, I plug the phone in, iTunes starts itself up and immediately starts "sync in progress"... when it finishes, the iPhone music and video now matches my pBook iTunes... in other words, it ERASED all the music and video from the phone! There was no warning that it would do this, no dialog boxes or "are you sure" buttons.



Gonna make for a long flight back to the states with out my music and movies !!



Oh well... just thought I'd give the rest of you a little warning, just in case.

LOL. I found that out too. It's a space saver any chance it can get. Once you watch a movie it will ask you if you want to delete it to conserve on space also.

iTunes has always worked that way. Hasn't it? It's part of the DRM. So you can't use an iPod to "share" music.

In iTunes preferences on the iPhone tab, there is an option to "automatically sync all iPhones connected to this computer". Uncheck it right away, as this option caused your problem. The iPhone works a little differently than iPods as well. You can't drag and drop files from multiple computers onto an iPhone, it has to be synced to move files to it. This means all the files you want on your iPhone have to all be on the same machine.



There are ways to work around this if you want music from one computer and pictures from another for example. But, you cannot get music from two different computers onto the iPhone.

Yep iTunes does that, it's part of the protection system, so that u can't copy your music on a friends computer.



In your case, iTunes was set up to automatically update your iphone...

In this case, it was a default iTunes/iPhone setting that erased it (I don't think it should be set to do that by default )



iTunes, however, does NOT behave this way with iPods... I can plug my iPod into any mac and play the songs on it through iTunes. It will NOT allow me to copy those songs to the mac, but it will PLAY them. (And it doesn't erase the iPod when you plug it in!! )
