S5 or A5

The economy and 'greener' option of the 240 bhp 3.0TDi, or the purity of the 4.2 V8 that sounds so good? Is using almost 100% more fuel worth it?

I drove the 2003 S6 avant, with basically the same engine, and it was fantastic. I would go with the S5 for sure if you have the dough. In fact, go with the S8 if you have even more dough.

Cars a total waste of money. You'll save more by buying one junker a year than buying anything new. Plus it's better for the environment.

I bet you're fun at Christmas!

As for your environmental comment. Old cars emit far more CO2 emmissions than new ones. Drive a Porsche 911 (996 or 997) through a majour city such as NY or Bangkok and you'll be blowing out cleaner air than the engine is sucking in.

Yeah they are nice. My brother had an S8 and then an RS6+ Avant. The new S8 has the same V10 as the Gallardo. The S5 engine is actually new and is based on the same engine that's in the R8.

By the time you've specked up an A5 to the same standard the price difference between the 3.0TDi and the S5 is negligible. The difference in the 0-60 time is only .8 of a second, but you're using half the fuel in the diesel and getting more torque. It sounds like a no brainer to go for the A5 3.0TDi, but that high reving V8 just sounds so good and pulls forever.

You can buy a used Honda that gets 30MPG.

if u have ~$100,000 to spend, you could always (try) to get a Tesla Roadster!

All-electric (up to 200-250 miles), over 6000 lithium-ion batteries, Lotus Elise chassis, and 0-60 in 4 seconds. (apparently, it's about $0.02 per mile)

But then, if u want to be even greener, u could always switch to alternative energy (ask ur eletric company)

UPDATE: do u live in the US? b/c i don't know if the Teslas are sold in other countries... but they r manufactured by Lotus, so u could run to Britain

If you want to be green you do what I do. I own one car for two adults, take the bus to work and rent an extra car truck when I need it. Skip your high priced ego mobile (i.e. smallcockmobile) and buy used.

I live in the UK, but I need something with room in the back for 2 small kids. A 2 seater roadster just isn't an option. I've looked at RS4s and M3s (although I disslike Bimmers), but they use too much fuel for my liking.

I already use a 'green energy' electricity supplier.

o, ok then. i'd go for the a5, as it's more practical

(you really will never need to use all that horsepower, so it's sort of useless to get the s5)

    Don't get a 2-door car - it is a misery with kids.

I have a volvo S60R and 2 kids left in the house, and even with 4 doors the small size of the car (and bad rear leg room) makes me want a larger car so that the kids have enough space. I am thinking of a BMW X3 diesel when they come out in the US (rumored) next year - and I think that the UK might already have them.

Saw a Tesla last weekend. Very cool. There are a shit-ton of Elises around here, but the Tesla was just different enough to make me notice. FYI, a guy I know busted his NDA and told me a few months ago that Tesla is coming out "soon" with a four-door M5-ish type car called the "White-Star."

Even so, if you have the money, get the S5. I'd recommend the RS4 even more, if you're so inclined. You are clearly a fan of adrenaline: if you're not going to buy a brutal car, why bother spending the money on a nice one?

For all the environuts out there, here's some math. I have a Subaru WRX that does about 22 mpg aggregate. jamac has a Prius. In the same amount of time, he has driven 75000 miles, and I have driven 20000, part of which includes a cross-country trip, where I got more like 25-26 mpg. Who's the worse polluter?

That's just it. I live near some of the best driving roads in the UK and I like to 'drive' my cars hard. I need to be able to get my 2 kids in the back so that rules out a lot of options. The RS4 is a great car and I'm quite capable of driving it properly and I'd love one, but it is an expensive car to own. Running costs are not that far off a Ferrari 430. I fell in love with the Porsche 997 (911), but although it has back seats (kind of), there's jut not enough room for a pram etc. The Jaguar XK 8 is nice, but too expensive and the A5/S5 is just about right. There's plenty of room in the back for kids, it has boot space and it drives well. The TDi Quatro has more torque than the V8, but you have to drive it differently to a petrol engine due to the shorter rev range. Accelleration is only a fraction of a second off the S5 and top end is the same. If only it sounded the same!
