Question about new iMacs/Leopard

If the new iMacs end up shipping in August, what do you think the chances are of Apple offering people who purchase it the offer to upgrade to Leopard for free when it ships in October? I don't understand why Apple would ship their new flagship models with Tiger when Leopard is right around the corner.

Thoughts?

It would be logical and customer friendly. Therefore Apple will not do it. They may, maybe, offer Leopard at a discount although I doubt it.

If they didn't do it, count me in as someone who would wait until October to buy one (when they're pre-installed with Leopard).

Then you had better start counting the days until nearly the end of October.

I'm not sure, but I could almost swear that once before new machines were within about 3 months of an OS release Apple had a coupon offer for the OS when making a purchase. I may be mistaken about the 3 months, but I know there has been the coupon deal in the past.

Hmm. Is it really worth it to wait two months, if the machine ship in August? It's only $129, and remember, since the retail disc is platform-independent, you can upgrade your old G5's and G4's with it too. The iMac restore discs only work on that model.

Call me crazy but I think you would be better off if the iMac shipped with the last version of Tiger instead of Leopard. I really like Tiger and it's rock solid at this point.

That said I am looking forward to Leopard. But I'm waiting for 10.5.1 before I make the switch.

I have no idea why people wait for these updates on the OS 's from Apple. Must be ex windows user paranoia. I have bought every MacOS on day one since OS 8. I have never had any problems, and once OS X came it has been even better.

Yep. After all look at my user name.

And quit looking at me like that.

It's a $129.00 move. If you never intend to upgrade past 10.4, then there is no problem. If you plan on upgrading your OS, then the difference between 10.5 and 10.5.1 is $129.00. What's the time difference between 10.5 and 10.5.1? Could be days, weeks, or even months.

Exactly why I won't wait for Leopard and will glady buy it at a later date.

As I feared though it looks like Apple will release the iMac right after the tax free weekend in my state. Dang it all.

These have got to be Windows users... I've been using both Macs and Windows forever and never had even the slightest issue with any Mac update or new OS... I can't imagine anyone else has either unless there was some freak issue...

There's no point in waiting. It'll only be $129 (not $250+ like Windows) and it will be solid, just like every other release. 10.5.1 will only have minor fixes that no one will even notice.... just like all other OS updates...

well, i've got a macbook that i would also like to upgrade. i am tempted to wait until 10.5.1 because 10.4.1 came only about a month after 10.4.0....

tricky decision! i'll see how i feel when the imacs are released.

I have a nice collection of Apple coupons, all of which have language which assures me of their value as a discount against future releases.

I have never been able to use a single one.

I've had those also and probably still have some in a box somewhere. Never have understood how they work. If your computer comes with 10.5 Leopard (or you buy 10.5), then you will get updates/upgrades free, via the Internet, all the way up to 10.6 Saber-toothed tiger
