Hold the power button down for 5+ seconds.

Let's assume everything is working in the background. If you press command option control eject, the computer should shut down (without requesting to save unsaved documents). Give that a try and give it a minute or two to shut down.

okay, i'm trying that now, and it will turn on and off, but when it turns on, the screen stays black. The fan will come on, but then it stops. could it be overheated maybe? should i just leave it alone for awhile? plug it in, not plug it in! ps, THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Since it's a laptop, turn it off, take out the power cord and the battery and hold the power button for 10 seconds, and then put everything back together and try again. While you're at it, you may try resetting the nvram too (option apple p r) during startup.

yikes... not sure what to tell you. There is an iBook logic board replacement program. Yours may fall within the range of serial #'s if your logic board is failing:

    Check Here

Sounds like maybe the video card is dying (but don't quote me on that).

Try booting into Open Firmware and resetting:

I still have applecare on it, obviously they can't replace an ibook, but could they repair it? Or what could they do?

If you still have AppleCare, call them now. I just got off the phone with them about the laptop I am writing on now. Expect my box in the mail very soon to send it off to be repaired... They are great to work with in my experience.

It's too late to call them. What if I perform a Power Management Unit (PMU) reset? What would that do?

then you already did a PMU (the batter power cord/button thing).

Plug in a mouse and see if the problem lies only in the trackpad.

The iBook REP was for dual-USB iBook G3's, and it expired about six months ago.

I would call up the AppleCare line (1-800-275-2273) and have them ship you a box. If it's under AppleCare, they'll get it taken care of. Make sure to back it up before you send it, though.
