New iMac speakers?

Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on how Apple will incorporate it's speakers into the new iMac. It sounds like the "chin" could be eliminated, which is where the speakers have been housed in the iMac's current form. Anybody think Apple will go back to the iMac G4 format with external speakers? Or could you see Apple mounting them on the sides like many LCD monitors & TVs are today.

Just curious...

I wouldn't mind seeing them create some external speakers with a little more power in them. The old iMac speakers were OK at best...not much bass when turned up - just a lot of rattling.

Nowadays with so much media (music, movies...etc) being used with the macs, I'd like to see better speakers to enjoy it!

The chin is rumored to be to getting smaller, it's apparently not being eliminated. It goes with out saying external speakers would be a step backwards, I'd be willing to bet my house they will remain internal. And 'cuencap', if you really want to buy external speakers, they are available everywhere. Bose make several sets.

I've had the Harmon Kardon soundsticks with that big bass thingy since it came out. I think Apple should go external. THere is a big difference.

The grilles on the back edge either side of the hinge, when the macbook is open, the speakers sound reflects of the screen and towards you.

Back to using the Apple Pro Speaker port would be good to provide high power without a seperate power supply.

Or use Firewire ( like these Lacie offerings ).

Why exactly would external speakers be a step backwards??? Instead of buying $300 bose speakers, why wouldn't you want Apple to make a quality set that comes with the iMac? I do not get your logic here...

I bet about £5 they will stay internal too. I think that matches the value of your Irish house or should I say box outside the pub.

They're in the 5th dimension. You have to invert your Macbook to see them but you need to be a certified technician to know how to do that.

Am I the only one who thinks the iMac speakers are actually pretty good and will fit inside a new smaller enclosure just fine? They managed to fit speakers inside a 17" model so now the 20" is the base model just take everything out the 17" and put it in the smaller 20". The chin can still disappear.

I'll tell you what speakers need to be improved are the towers and MAC MINI! Geez c'mon Apple when are these updates going to arrive already?

All-in-one is the whole point of the iMac. The last thing people want is other wires and speakers taking up space. Besides the current speakers do the job as is. Much more minimal and cleaner this way. More Apple. Thus I'd bet my house I am so confident external speakers will not happen. They could always make more external speakers, but they would be optional, just like now.

You mean instead of 'you' buying speakers. The majority don't feel the need to, that's why they aren't needed. If you really really really care about the audio quality of your desktop speakers, then by all means buy them. Though they sound fine to me.

It depends on what you are listening to. For many but not most uses today they are fine. But I think Apple never offered great external speakers for the iMac and I doubt it will do anytime soon. And if you think about it, it makes little sense to offer substantially more.

So the one who cares about audio quality is going to spend extra money on a decent external system. And so, it is better if the iMac retains its compact form with its internal speakers. Just my opinion.

There are many after-market options. Why would Apple need to do this for you?

External speakers are nice if space and clutter aren't issues. It's a deal-breaker for many if they are.

For the record, I have the JLB "ghost" speakers on my eMac (which makes a HUGE difference)

I guess I wouldn't care either way... (if they are external, I hand down whichever are inferior and if internal, I just keep my current speakers)

What could always be done is to design external speakers for the iMac, and having it as an add-on option, and also available in the Apple Stores to be bought separately for users who want 'em anyway (especially good for Mac Pro, as well as MacBook Pro owners, as they would match as well. They'd probably also go well with the soon to be killed Mac Mini, with its metal look on its sides.

    Now that's a good idea.

With Apple's venturing into music, movies, etc. in recent years, maybe it's time for them to start selling some good external speakers...
