Brushed Metal

Safari is not an i-app.

e.g.

iChat (Brushed metal)

iCal (Brushed metal)

iMovie (Brushed metal)

So why does it have a Brushed metal interface?

Mail is not an i-app and has the aqua feel and therefore so should Safari.

Any comments?

Also, I?ve read other internt sites that suggest Apple will completely integrate Safari into the OS. Will this mean it will lose it?s Brushed metal effect and become part of the finder, just like Internet Explorer on the PC?

It has a brushed metal interface because it looks cool IM(and Apple's)HO. I tried the hack that removed the metal and it looked awful. Sometimes, style must prevail.

Um I removed Metal and I thought Safari looked WAY better. To each his own. Or her own.

However! Metal was supposed to be a metaphor for an Appliance. QT Player: Stereo Deck. iTunes: Stereo Deck. The other iApps shouldn't even have Metal but Safari is just stretching it too far. Metal sucks. At least it is easy to get rid of, unlike Internet Explorer!

i must say, i used the hack to make safari like mail, not metally, and i didn't like the way it looked at all.

i like the current metal implementation better than when it first started... what was that, sharlock 2? sick! i think now it is coming of age...

either that or i've gone retarded, and got used to it.

You've gone retarded. Maybe. It's hard to tell. It's like my University's french fries, I can't tell whether they're actually getting worse, I'm getting used to them, or both.

Apple obviously wants to brand their media apps (which include Safari, the only i-App without i in its name -- which is ironic considering the i originally stood for internet) as one suite using the brushed metal theme. The problem is with the brushed metal UE guideline, which is inconsistent already, and how they want developers to use the metal appearance since they've provided it to them to use.

If they just said that brushed metal is for specific media apps that work mainly in one window and target home/hobby use, it would be a lot clearer already. Problem is that most apps are "media" apps in one way or another.

Also, Apple isn't gong to intergrate Safari's WebCore and JavaScriptCore into the OS in the same way that MS integrates IE into Windows. They're integrating it like how they integrated the AddressBook -- as a modular framework. Other apps can then choose to use the engines like plug-ins. It won't always trap RAM for itself, get hooks into kernel space, or be used to turn the Finder into a browser.

If my 'pissed off person who can't think before typing' translator is working properly, I believe sushimi was implying that Apple not integrate Safari into the operating system.

Either that or they have the internet typing equivalent of turets syndrome...

Branding. It's the reason brushed metal exists.

Mail is not an i-app and has the aqua feel and therefore so should Safari.

Hehe. My Mail app is brushed metal.

Actually, I have brushed metal on the following apps: MoreCalculator.app, OmniDictionary.app, Mail.app, Sherlock.app (which I think will die due to Safari's existence), and probably something else. The thick window border brush metal hack for Chimera 0.5 was also very good I thought.

Apple's got a plethora of UI problems that are hard to avoid. The differences between Carbon and Cocoa apps is problematic. Really can't help that. Drawers I think has been their worst UI idea. Draggable and negative space brush metal windows their best. Actually, wider aspect ratio screens is probably their best UI idea, and they need to make use of that increased screen space with some of their single window style apps (mail, safari, iPhoto, iCal, iTunes, et al).

Apple is NOT integrating Safari into Mac OS X. They are integrating a foundation called "WebCore", used for redering web content.

Safari and the Finder will NOT be unified.

WebCore will allow easier and faster web content in applications which require it (web browsers, e-mail programs, docs browsing, etc etc).

    It's called WebCore.

    Do people still use this?

    Do you know that if you search on a word with Google and it is found in the Dictionary, the bit that says "Searched the web for triskaidekaphobia" becomes a hyperlink to <a href="http://www.dictionary.com"; target="_blank">http://www.dictionary.com;

As an added bonus Google automatically redirects many common spelling mistakes and prompts you when there is ambiguity.

It's a very nice feature, and it's always there in the toolbar of Safari.Â*
