Hello, can anyone confirm that the iPhone is actually hardware locked to Cingular, not just software locked? What's the current state of the technology for using the phone in Europe?

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I just came back from a two week cruise to Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Sweden and then 2 days in London. Before I left, I called AT&T and told them to activate International Roaming. Except when at sea, the phone parts of the iPhone worked fine. I think there were only a few places where I could not send SMS.

However, I am bracing for my next bill.

You can only use the iPhone in Europe if you have an AT&T contract and you activate International Roaming.

You cannot unlock the iPhone for use on any other network at the moment.

Yes, Spindrift, I dreamed of buying an iPhone in the US and slip in my European SIM card . . ..

Seems I have to wait until they offer the iPhone in Europe with Orange . . .
