You'll also want to download Divx Doctor (listed on the same page...just scroll down on the left hand side). It will fix .avi movies that have audio problems, or if the audio is encoded in WMA format (a lot are that way).
*.avi files play just fine in QuickTime Player provided you have the codecs that they use. A number of files will simply never play, though, because the codes were never ported or reverse engineered to work on Mac OS.
Right. AVI is essentially just a 'wrapper' for the video, just like MOV is. You have no way of knowing what codec a file uses just because it says AVI.
Unfortunately, many codecs commonly used in AVI are unavailable for the mac. Indeo Video is the biggest one (though there were OS 9 codecs, Intel has ignored OS X). DivX is another, and depending on the flavor, you can find a codec for it under OS X.

Is the .avi sound bug fixed in quicktime?
Anyway, what you need is either this:
<a href="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html" target="_blank">http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html</a>
or this:
<a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16623" target="_blank">http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16623</a>
They're both not really good, but they'll play most .avi movies.
