Hello.

Ive got about 8000 tracks in my itunes library (via my PCs Hard drive).

Is it possible to to copy all the tracks (intact with all relevant information such as artist, album, genre which took me ages to type up) onto my laptop (or should I say external hard drive when I get it as I dont have any space on the Inspirion 4100, 40GB)

Im a bit of a virgin at this so dont bite my head off please. I take it if I download the latest itunes onto my laptop from the internet, what would I have afterwards

Thanks in advance.

I'm on Windows XP

    Hey there, treen74,

All the information you mention is stored inside the actual music files, so yes, you can just transfer all the files and keep the information. Just go to your main music library, click ctrl-a and drag the files from the iTunes window to an explorer-window showing your external drive.

PS. If you like how iTunes works, you should try out a mac with osX one day. It beats using Windows just like iTunes beats Windows Media Player

    thanks for replying.

Would clicking and dragging remove the information from the PC? I do want to keep it on my PC, aswell as doing a copy onto my laptop (external hard drive)

    cheers

Is there an idiots guide i can refer to?

Yes, since you're dragging the files from an external volume, it only makes copies of the files you drag.

Nope, your just copying it! Don't worry, iTunes really plays safe with you precious music!

Just try it out with one or two files. You will see the original staying in iTunes and the copy on your external drive. On your laptop, assuming you have iTunes already installed, do the exact reverse (drag the files from your external drive to the main music library in the itunes window). Voila!
