When you hold down the alt-key at boot, is the windows partition the only one that appears even when you have the install disc in?

Did you perhaps choose the Mac partition when installing Windows and wrote over your OS X? If you get the Macdrive software trial:

while booted into Windows, it should let you see if your Mac partition is still there.

Not being able to boot the system CD happens to a few people. Are you using the disc that came with your machine? Also, can you confirm that when the disc is in and you boot by holding alt that the disc doesn't show up? What spec is your machine btw and what OS are you running as well as what is the OS on the installer disc?

The Tiger disc isn't a standalone Tiger disc that you bought though is it? For example a standalone Tiger disc that you bought separately and have used on machines in the past. Like say you had a powerbook or something before and bought a full Tiger disc set, that would be a PowerPC set of discs and they wouldn't boot an Intel Mac.

If it's the set of discs that came bundled with the Macbook Pro then there should be no reason for it not to boot those. If it is definitely an Intel set of discs then try resetting your PRAM by holding command-option-p-r at boot:

Then try and see if it will recognise the disc. What to do is boot holding the alt key until you see the Windows drive and then insert the installation disc.
