How To Install Classic??

How do I install Classic on my iBook G4 (1Ghz)? I already have 10.4.10 installed. I have the Mac OS X Tiger Install DVD, but cannot find Classic to install.

I booted from the DVD, but there were no options to install Classic. Is Classic not available for Tiger? That would really be a major problem, because I have thousands of files that I need to acces, and cannot get to otherwise .... !!

Help!! Thanks.

It came with some of the installation discs but not all of them. they declared OS 9 dead so it makes sense that they wouldn't include it. What types of file do you need to access? There may be a way to open them in OS X.

Apple dropped Classic installers a long time ago. If you really need it, you can look over eBay for System 9 installers. Marvin is right, what files are you trying to open?

I haven't looked on the Tiger disk... but the 10.3 system disks had a "Classic Installer" on them ... perhaps in the (Install additional Software" folder?

The catch is, it's only the Classic Environment... you still need your own copy of OS9. The OSX install disks do NOT come with a version of OS9 at all.

I think that you may be confusing issues. The last shrinkwrap version of MacOS X to ship with MacOS 9 was MacOS X 10.1. It shipped with MacOS 9.2.1. If you purchased a new PPC-based Mac with MacOS X 10.2, 10.3, or 10.4, it shipped with MacOS 9.2 on the System Restore disk and possibly preinstalled. All PPC versions of MacOS X support Classic, whether or not MacOS 9 distribution CDs were included in the shrinkwrap. Classic support becomes visible if you have a valid MacOS 9 System Folder installed. The Classic Installer installs a Classic version of MacOS 9; it does not require a separate MacOS 9 distribution CD.

I found my old Panther (10.3.3) disk with Classic! Have Classic installed now and running, so I can access my ancient Reunion family history files. None of the Mac Systems will open those files!!! They are a special kind of file that can only be opened with Reunion.

FYI if you're planning on continuing with genealogy:

According to the Leister web site http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/version9/requirements.php the latest version called "Reunion 9" runs on Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.
