Writing to NTFS drive with OSX

Hello All,

I am a newcomer to Macs, having owned my macbook for about 2 months, and so far I love it.

However, I do have a quick question about writing to NTFS drives from my MAC. I have a small home network with 2 windows machines and my macbook. One of my machines is used as a file server, running windows XP. I have 2 300GB hard drives in a RAID1 configuration, formatted in NTFS. I would like to store/back up all of my files on the server that I access from my macbook.

Everything that I have read says that Macs cannot write to NTFS drives; that they can only read. However, I have been able to write, create new folders, and just about anything else that I have wanted to do on the networked drive from the macbook!

What's the deal? Has their been a recent update to OSX that allows macs to write to NTFS drives?

I am trying to decide whether I have to reformat the drive to FAT32, or if i will be able to keep the drive as is.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That's because you are adding the files over a network. The filesystem of the drive is abstracted by the networking protocols - The Mac sends the data to Windows, and then Windows handles the task of writing the files to the disk.
