Apple Ships Directly from China?

I finally got a Fedex tracking number for my new Applebook pro and was surprised that it is shipping directly from China. Doesn't Apple maintain a distribution center in the U.S.? And how long can I expect shipping to take? (I sometimes order from China for my retail store and at best, it usually takes 10 days. My patience expired a week ago.)
