Is it true?
The Rigister has a new story concerning new Powermacs and the G5 <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/23078.html"; target="_blank">http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/23078.html</a>;
It looks like the source of all these rumors is the same so are we all excited about nothing? The more we hear the more it seems real. I just hope we are not going to dissapointed in January.

God I hope it's true, then we can stop worring obout hardware and concentrate on software!

If the instant rebate on the G4 and LCD displays is any sign, I would figure that we are about to see a serious update, whether it is G4 or G5 based I think will end up being relatively irrelevant if the other components (faster bus, memory etc. discussed ad nauseum elsewhere) contribute significantly to a faster system.
Net net... There are too many signs pointing to something new to completely disregard a significant upgrade.

He claims the following:
1) 1GHz barrier will be "left far behind."
2) The so-called "G5" will be Apollo G4s not the true 64 bit G5s
Without that I would safely say the information in the Register and MOSR is bunk.
Then again, the AI owners over at MacNN will love it. Can you imagine all the whining posts these boards will get? They could approach advertisers following the Jan 5 keynote and say "see, look... we can get over 5,000 posts in one hour! Now cough up the $$$"

Another reason why we could be surprised (well technically its expected now) is because other major companies such as Cisco and Silicon Graphics have expressed interest in the G5. That would be 3 big time customers for Motorola. Now with the G4 and G3 Apple has been their only customer. Apple doesn't have a big market share in the PC world and Moto may have just said it's not worth our time. Now if the source is correct, the G5 gives them some big time cash.

Motorola has already released a G5 class processor (the 8540).

Released? Or just announced? Thought I'd read somewhere else that this chip wasn't due out until 2nd half of '02.

If the G5 is to be in the 85XX product line, as a lot of people have been posting, I thought it was interesting that the MPC8540 won't be even sampling until " the second half of 2002."
The MPC8540 is an anounced chip with the specifications fairly well outlined. The MPC85XX - G5 has not been announced and information on it is relatively speculative.
My guess is that the G5 will come out after the MPC8540, hence, would be sampling later in the 2nd half of 2002 and introduced at the end of the year. Hope I'm wrong, but .......
One additional piece of information, sorry no link but it is in Motorola's press releases in April I believe. Motorola has been manufacturing embedded chip cores using HiP7(0.13µm, SOI) since around April. This should give them valuable information about the manuf. process and work out problems. Some one, I believe it was Eskimo felt like this process was being used on ram chips?? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway this may be an indication that the G4 Apollo will be ready by Jan.

i think by now every apple enthuisiast or otherwise has come to the realization that there are no solid hints such as this left out in the open without apple legal getting involved... i'm sure some of you remember the fiasco with ATI. I'm also sure everyone realizes that ship dates can change and moto has no obligation to update them to the general public. They could say it will arrive in 2005 and it wouldn't make a difference until of course the chip is sent out.
