Engadget is reporting they have verified a group's claims of a quick, software-only unlock procedure for the iPhone:

    The iPhones in Europe and Asia are indeed being released locked.



    BUT -- I hope people are ready to shell out 50 bucks to unlock their iPhones every time Apple does a software update. It's in their best interest to maintain their locked arrangement with ATT since they get about 400 dollars over the course of the two year contract in addition to each phone sold hardware wise -- and all they need is about 6 lines of code to lock those phones back up again.



    I think people are best to wait.
