Keys Out of Order

Hello,

I just went through the problem of reinstalling OS X (used to be 10.3 apparently the disk is scratched somehow, so now running 10.2) on my iBook (Firewire) but now my external hard drive (USB) where all my backups are is messed up. I get the "Keys out of order" message in Disk Utility, which does not seem to be able fix the issue.

Is it at all possible to get my files back like this person did? Or is everything toasted? Does it make any difference for solving (however much of this can or can't be solved anyway) whether the hard drive is internal, Firewire, USB, boot volume, not boot volume, or through Target Disk Mode?

Thanks,

Tedrick

Try running fsck on it from your terminal:

    http://www.osxfaq.com/Tutorials/fsck/index.ws

    Open /Applications/utilities/terminal

type fsck -f /Volumes/<name of drive> - if you start typing the name of the drive, tab will auto-complete the name

If fsck needs the drive ID, use df as mentioned in the link to get the equivalent /dev/disk0s3 or whatever ID that matches your drive name the use that in the fsck command.

Tried fsck. No luck. I think it might have soemthingt o do with the 4.1.7 firmware update that I jsut installed, which I forgot to mention. I am going to try plugging the drive into another Mac to see if is just my computer. Unfortunately, I don't have another Mac around so I have to barrow a friend's some time.

Did you run it a few times like in the article linked to above? It said you had to do it 3 times or so.

I've run it more times than I can count. Tried plugging it into my friend's Mac. No luck.

I think the only thing would be to try a more powerful disk repair software like Disk Warrior:

Thanks. DiskWarrior worked wonders! And it was really quick too, especially for using it through USB 1.1. Thanks for the help!
