Maya Complete is doing well...Unlimited next?

Maya Complete has reached complete parody(bad pun, I know)with the Linux/Windows versions and is selling quite well. But Maya Unlimited, Alias|Wavefront's flagship product is exclusive to Windows and Linux, with no Mac version. I am thinking that Unlimited will be soon to the Mac platform.

I think it's only a matter of time. Apple should be able to calm any larger developer fears about Hardware coming and I expect to see some movement on the High End apps.

Apple is one busy company but I think they will be well positioned for success going into 2004.

Once Apple releases software that Maya Unlimited customers would be interested in, I think we'll see Maya Unlimited.

There's no question that A|W was testing the waters with Maya, and I don't think there's any question that they're pleased with the results.

Which is good, because they need the sales right now.

Did you mean software or hardware?

Apple is offering a special "Buy Shake and Save on Maya" deal. Shake seems to be something that Unlimted customers are interested in. I mean, WETA Digital, the FX house that did all the effects for Lord of the Rings, is using Apple's Shake and A|W's Maya Unlimited side by side. As for hardware, BuonRotto, it seems that the xServe is an ideal renderfarm solution.

[quote]As for hardware, BuonRotto, it seems that the xServe is an ideal renderfarm solution.

Not with its present FP performance. A $600-800 white box PC is a better "render-farm" than anything Apple makes at this time.

The Xserve will probably never make a good renderfarm. Renderfarms need to be cheap, Barebones and fast. My dream would be that Apple continues to push Darwin to the point in where they could sell PPC 970 Front End HW running Maya Unlimited and use Darwin X86 for Renderfarms. If Marklar is a real skunkworks project it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm thinking that Apple with it's control over Darwin might be able to add some "features" to the Darwin Renderboxen that would not necessarily be available while running Linux boxen.

I guess that the xServe's flashing-disco status indicator lights don't add to rendering performance
