LaTeX PDFs opening incorectly

For some reason certain PDFs generated with LaTeX by my professors are not read correctly by Preview. The files look like images of the text. The thing is, when i open them in Acrobat (reader or full version), it shows up as text like any other page. It is inconsistent as to what files cause the problem. I get these files from different professors so i do not know what they use. Also, sometimes some files from the same professors work while others from the same guy do not.

Does anybody know what i can do on my end to stop this from happening?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Sounds like a font issue. It's not LaTeX fault BTW. Man it's been a long time since I worried about this stuff. I guess the PDF used PS fonts that are not .... I don't remember.

LaTeX doesn't do PDF. It makes DVI files. Memory fading HTH.

This is not true. Most TeX packages today include the Pdftex utility.
