I plan to order my first Mac next week; the black MacBook with 2 Gigs Ram. Unfortunately, I will also have to run a few Windows applications either within Parallel or Boot Camp.

1. What are the pros and cons for running Windows applications either in Parallel or Boot Camp? Should 2 Gig's of RAM be enough to run both Windows Xp and OSx in parallels?

2. What is the recommended anti-virus software application that work well for detecting viruses, spyware, spam when running in either environment (Parallel or Boot Camp)?

3. Should I purchase an anti-virus software program also for the Mac side?

Thank You

Rick

There aren't really any cons except for the fact that Parallels is somewhat slow, if they are windows only applications you'll find that they will run better in Windows running Boot Camp than on most PCs. 2GB should be fine depending on what applications you are using. Parallels will run a lot slower than Boot Camp, you won't be able to run 3D intensive apps, video editing apps, games etc. Also note that Boot Camp will only recognize 2GB of ram at the current time.

Nothing will catch every virus but I highly recommend nod32 it works very well and doesn't get in your way. It has an on demand scanner for scanning files on the spot, it can scan all your drives, and it automatically scans emails and web pages. I'm not sure how much it costs, I downloaded it .

Nope, I don't believe there are any current viruses, there have only been a dozen exploits in the past and most were from before OS X, I can personally guarantee you that you won't get a virus on the mac side ever. Also, viruses you get on Windows from Boot Camp or Parallels will not effect OS X. Just be sure that you scan every file

i dont know about the windows things, but i would use bootcamp, parallells will be a lot slower, all knows that, who knows what leopard will do with bootcamp, it may make it poosible to boot without restarting, also about the mac virus they have found that putitng a mac anti virus exploits you, the only way to get a mac virus is if you let it. a mac asks you before installign everything, and you must have a password, if you need any hints just pm me, i just switched to a mac this year so i am not too indepth , but should be of some help. i can tell you any programs you may need, and also where to get them for , uh. cheaper than wholesale price
