I have a 1G 4GB nano that is formatted for Windows, but I recently purchased a MacBook and it obviously doesn't collaborate. is there any way that I can reformat my nano to use Mac OS X's file system?

Actually, I think you can use a Windows formatted iPod with the Mac OS. You would want to do this if you intend to enable disk-use across both platforms. To reformat, just connected the iPod to your Macbook, launch iTunes and click the "restore" button in the main pane while you have your nano selected under "devices" in the sources column.

The mac should work just fine, but if you really want to reset it, you can use iTunes to restore it. Apple has a page on this:
