Should I get this or wait for that?

I'm in the budget of around 3000-4000 US dollars. I do promotional films as well as short films. I need a machine that is fast, but not industrial strength fast.

I was wondering if anyone has been using the new iMacs for video editing? I was considering the 24 inch 2.8 Ghz iMac with 2 Gb Ram (I plan on buying cheaper ones and installing it later), and 500 Gb of space (planning on buying cheap externals if I run out of space). I'm currently running on a Mac Book Pro Intel core duo with 1 gb of ram and 80 gb of space. I mainly use external hard drives and this has been doing well for me; I just need a stronger, faster system. I'm also moving into a small-ish apartment so the iMac might be quite the space saver.

I'm mostly working in standard definition, broadcast quality. I have Final Cut Studio and will soon be getting Studio 2.

Should I get this iMac or should I wait for the new Mac Pros to come out?

Any suggestion or advice will be very helpful... just don't laugh at my cheap video editing habits.

Honestly, that iMac sounds perfect. Particularly if you are talking about Standard Def. You'll have a couple grand leftover to spend on cameras/ lenses/ film budget/etc.

Yep it'll be real fast, if you plan on using motion I would recommend getting 4GB of ram .

Well, I'm almost completely sold on the iMac so far... I'm just really tempted on waiting for the refreshed Mac Pros. Although, nvidia2008 brings up a good point of more money to spend on camera things.

I think I'll give it another month (like I did with the iPhone!) to wait and then buy.

Lenses ... I say besides color [gamma curve, etc], resolution, it is the next thing that differentiates amateur digital video from professional stuff. IMHO.
