I am about to make my first Apple purchase with the new IMac. However, I want to upgrade and have the most memory possible for it. I do not want to pay the cost for Apple to upgrade the memory. How difficult is it to add memory to the new IMac and how much would it cost me to go from 1GB to 4GB?

To say it's easy is subjective, depending on your experience and comfort level, but it seems EASY on the iMac. The RAM access panel is on the bottom edge and is secured by a single screw. It takes SODIMM type boards like previous iMacs and most laptops. The standard 1GB resides on a single board occupying one of two available slots. To upgrade to the max 4GB you need 2x2GB boards and pull the factory RAM out. Cost of 2 2GB about $300

Agreed. If you've ever changed RAM before, it IS easy. I just upped an iMac 2.8 ghz Core 2 Extreme to 4 gig of RAM the other day. Just make sure that you firmly (and carefully) wedge the RAM into place.

I've noticed that prices for apparently the same size memory fluctuates wildly from one manufacturer to another. What is the difference? Is an expensive stick that much better that a cheap one?

Probably, but what is also very important when buying memory is to check if the seller provides lifetime warranty. OWC does and it is hard to beat the new price for the 4 GB kit.

It couldn't be easier (literally). There is a philips screw on the bottom of the unit. Remove it. Unplug the old memory. Plug in the new memory. Replace panel and screw. You're done. Just make sure you do it in a area where there is no static electricity around, and put a soft cloth or towel on the table to protect your Mac from getting any scratches. nJoy

I don't know where it is on the top of my head--but if you do a google search, there is a video---I'm not sure who did it Macworld? that shows exactly how to replace the hard drive and the memory--

It is simple.....and Other World Computing is a great source as others have said
