I'm wondering if download speed helper apps are worth the price. I've been trying out Speed Download, but 20-30 k/s just doesn't seem that fast are that much of an improvement over the browser's download (I'm have 256 k dedicated pipeline). Are they worth it? If so, which one do you like best?

Speed Download is the best, hands down. At work I am on our office lan not sure of the connection speed but when I download without speed download I get on average 80-90 K a second. With speed download it is not uncommon to see speeds reach as high as 480 K a second. So in answer to your question, it is definately worth the price.

If you are just on a 256kb pipe, I seriously doubt you'll see major improvents from a download accelerator.

I also have to put in a word that download accelerators are the scum of the internet tools because of how they steal connections from other users. BAD BAD!

On my cable modem, the downloads come through the pipeline pretty much as fast as the server can push the stuff out. The server are the weak link in the chain, so if you have a cable connection, Safari, Chimera/Camino and OmniWeb all download like Speed Gonzalez with a rocket pack.
