I've had a mac for a couple of months now with nothing protecting it, and it seems to be working fine. Still it would be nice to have something just in case. I did a search before I posted, but I did not see anything that would help.....

Is there a anti-virus/firewall program out there that you guys would recommend? I thought about buying Norton, but from what I heard it does not work very well. I've heard there are some good free ones out there.

Thanks

Norton products generally result in corrupt OS X. Potential data loss and a bucket full of hassle. Symantec may have got their act together now but so many of us were bitten in the past few years I've no reason to go back to them.

OS X's Firewall is just fine.

    The NSA agree.

If you need tighter control of it for particular reasons try Flying Butress.

Viruses aren't available for Macs yet although this will doubtless change as the platform expands. There are some Trojans but the OS X administrator would have to authorize their installation otherwise no executable code can be run. Only get files from trusted sources!

If you wish to detect Viruses that may affect people running Windows who you have contact with try the free ClamXAV.

Microsoft Office files can hold malicious macros so disable macros if you are uncertain about the origin of the file.

No current viruses, the built in firewall is fine. I've been running OS X for over 3 years with no protection, downloading all kinds of files and stuff, I've never even considered getting one or the other.
