OS X server : accessing the file server remotely and firewalls?
[perhaps this is more of a genius bar type question -- apologies if so]
has anyone got any experiences they would like to share about accessing a OS X server remotely?
let me give you the situation I am in:
OS X server in-house on a broadband connection, networked to multiple OS X and PC's. Everything is using DHCP including the server. Some of us now work from home at odd times and we want to access files from outside the network.
I guess the server needs its own IP number.
But our boss is paranoid about security of the server. What is the inbuilt firewall like?

But, to make your boss perhaps happier, why don't you...
1) Set up a network-wide firewall (presumably you already have one?)
2) Forward ports 548 and 427 to the server from the firewall
3) Use the external IP address to access the server from outside
When you access the firewall's external IP, you'll get punted through to the server automagically.
This is how I have it set up at home (with, of course, the server's firewall *also* on just for kicks).
i think the router has a firewall, but this was installed ages ago by the supplier who provided the broadband connection, so god knows how its set-up! i'll investigate...
