G5 not mounting folders/icons on desktop on startup

My G5 powerpc has been having some problems the last few weeks, but I recently got new macbook pro so haven't really been paying much attention to it. it first started with hard drive space disappearing... i had like 10 gigs free and then the next day i would check and there would be 1 gig free and i hadnt been downloading anything and then i cleared like 15 more gigs and the next day there was like 600 mb left. now the computer is running really slowly, like i get the pinwheel for a couple minutes for just doing simple tasks like clicking on the finder icon. My first guess is that the computer is running really slowly and acting odd because the start disk is close to being full, but I don't wanna clear more space just so it can disappear again. Also, the main problem is that on start up it won't mount or load any of the folders or icons (my hard drive) I had on there previously... though, when I put a cd or dvd in, that loads on the desktop, but quite slowly. Once again my first guess is that the computer is low disk space and maybe won't mount anything? But once again, I dont wanna clear space for it to just disappear. I had one or two reasonably important folders on my desktop that I wanted to transfer to my new computer, but now I can't access them, so I picked up a firewire cable and did target disc mode to try and get those files. Target disc mode loaded up fine, the whole hard drive was there, but the desktop folder was empty (and yes, I check under the right user... there was only one user on the computer).

So right now I have a few problems... I basicially would just like to know what some of you might think is wrong with my computer and how to maybe fix it based on what I've told you. But the main question is there another place where those folders I had on my desktop might be stored? Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for your time!
