does anyone else think so? it's nice to have all those pretty images, but to be honest i find the right pane on the menu system a right pain (pardon the pun). the images serve no useful purpose and do nothing but slow down navigating the menu system

does anyone else think so? i'd turn them off if i could

I had a play with the classic @ the apple store - thought the same thing. Was apparent on the nano as well. I was wanting to get the 160GB classic but am hesitating now....

I honestly don't find it much of a problem, its just different thats all.

I do agree though, having the option to turn it off would at least give the option to the end user.

Apple had t change the menu system to avoid paying patent royalties to Creative, who somehow won a lawsuit about this.

The new menu is smart, but there won't be an option to return to the previous menu system ever - due to aforementioned royalites.

I agree. Also, coverflow on the new interface is brutally slow....it's almost laughable. Try it on the classic then try it on the Touch or iPhone and you'll see what I mean.

For me, Coverflow is useless since I have my albums organized by Artist or mixes, but rarely listen to a single album - typically spoken word or self-made compilations. I've been a little bit disappointed to see Apple focusing more and more on Coverflow with each iteration of the iPod (thereby distancing me more and more from the desire to get one.)

I'm waiting for an Apple PDA (actually I was waiting for the iTouch but with iCal crippled, it's no deal for me.)

there's definitely a lot of noticeable lag, and it is a pain and was never a problem with previous versions. i think the right pane system would be better if it didn't display album art, just static images. that would speed it up a lot, i think
