is there a way to turn of that start-up "bhaaa"?

    Figure out how to use applescript to mute your speakers on shutdown and enable them (if you want) on Finder startup. My system is always muted and I don't hear it on startup.



    It's UNIX. You can do anything. How difficult it is depends.

    Startupsound.prefpane adds a seperate volume control in System Preferences for the Start-up Chime volume.
