No sound after unplugin the earplugs

I have a problem with my MacBook's sound. Whenever I unplug the earbuds there is no sound, a red light flashes inside the plug and a prohibition symbol appears in the volume indicator.



Whenever this happens sound comes back randomly...



Any tips on how to solve this?
