Does anybody know if OSX is compatible with CPU upgrade cards? I have a B&W mac that I am thinking of upgrading to a G4 but I saw a blurb on Apple's website that implied OSX was not compatiable with cpu upgrade cards.

    Yes, some are, the best place to find out is from the upgrade sites themselves, or from a site I like to visit <a href="http://www.macgurus.com."; target="_blank">http://www.macgurus.com.</a>;

    A few sites to look at:

    <a href="http://www.sonnettech.com"; target="_blank">http://www.sonnettech.com</a>;

    <a href="http://www.xlr8.com"; target="_blank">http://www.xlr8.com</a>;

    Both should be very illuminating.

    Go for it! I've got a B&W Mac with an XLR8 G4 500 in it. There is no problem running OS X.

    I am using a G4 500 Sonnet without any problems in the same machine. The good thing about Sonnet is that they will reply to your emails with technical questions and the have just dropped the price by $100 and they give you an un-installer so you can go back.

    This may be useful if Apple ever releases something that dissables machines with CPU upgrades.

    The Sonnet Duet card (DP 500 MHz) is not compatible with early-model AGP G4 machines, that's about all I can tell you with any certainty. And according to Soonet, there's not likely to be a DP upgrade in the future because of some funky thing Apple did with the early rev Uni-North controller thang.

    My Beige G3 has a special G3 500 upgrade from Newer, before they went under.

    it runs fine and with L2CacheControl, the L2 cahce works great (or so I believe).

    Only to those that uses the Rev 3 UniNorth IO chip. As far as I know those machines did come with OS 8.6 preinstalled.
