Making Movies With DVD Clips?

I was hoping someone here might know how/if I can use iMovie to create a presentation of various movie clips?

I don't know if it can be done with iMovie, but I've seen videos people have made by piecing together different scenes from movies, sometimes adding music... that sort of thing.

If iMovie can't do it, is there another program I can use? And if iMovie can, is it pretty simple to do a project like that?

I have iLife '06, I think. It's either '06 or '07. I also have Flash and Powerpoint. I don't know if those could work.

As you can tell, I'm a complete greenhorn when it comes to this, so I'll be grateful for all the help I can get. Stupidly detailed instructions won't be unappreciated!

Thanks!

You need to rip the DVDs first. You can use programs like MacTheRipper or yadex. Yadex ( http://www.videohelp.com/tools/YadeX ) is pretty good as you can choose chapters to extract visually.

Once you have those basic clips, it's a good idea to trim them down before encoding and you can use MPEG streamclip ( http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html ) for this but you need the apple mpeg 2 component.

You can use the same program to convert to DV and those clips will drop straight into imovie.
