Can Applications be Stacked?

Finally loaded Leopard last night and still fiddling around, but I was wondering if particular applications could be stacked. It would be nice if I could have one stack be graphics apps, one be office apps, web apps, etc. Can this be done? I think I understand Spaces and know that this is what that's for, but I just thought I'd ask about Stacking.

Thanks

I did that with my most used apps, dumped their aliases into a folder and then put the folder on the dock: instant stack. I wanted to do a Smart Folder that way, but it didn't stack (haven't read much about if it will and I don't know how, or it just won't).
