Mac price increase since Leopard release

Any body noticed and can explain the price increase of all macs in order to cover the price of the Leopard OS? Will Apple bring the price back to the standard price points anytime soon?

Example, basic iMac was FROM 1,199CAD (canadian dollar) and is now FROM 1,249CAD. A 50CAD increase with similar increase on all other macs. Similar on the US Apple store.

Not to mention that I cannot wait for the Canada Apple Store to adjust ALL its price to reflect the canadian dollar at 1.05USD. The iMac is 100$ more in Canada where it should be basically the same.

Tks for your input!

I don't know about the rest of the lineup, but I printed a .pdf copy of the Mac Pro prices the day before Leopard came out and the prices are still the same now as then. I speaking of South of the Border; your southern border.

Apple_price_gougingMany Canadians were hoping that with the recent processor bump to Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pros, the company would also take the opportunity to correct the disparity in pricing for its notebook computers. No such luck.

Boris Ung, a French Canadian communications student at Laval University alerts EPICENTER that the prices for MacBooks remain $150 more in Canada than they do in the U.S. Ung himself was so incensed, he made a YouTube video documenting the price gouging.

And yet, as others have noted, the pricing shenanigans don't end with the MacBook. Everything from Apple TVs to the company's cinema displays are priced significantly higher in Canada. In fact, one of the only products with the same pricing scheme is Apple's newly released Leopard (both family and single user packs). If you're interested, there's even an Apple Canada Price Gouging blog that records the latest data on pricing fluctuations between the two countries. Given the relative strength of the Canadian dollar (the exchange rate now favors Canada), this seems like this presents a prime opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to buy cheap in the U.S. and turn a handsome profit in Canada. Anyone doing this yet?

Apple did not immediately respond to our requests for comment.

UPDATE: One piece of speculation is that Apple generally sets their international prices once a year, based on the current exchange rates and a bit of margin to allow for future fluctuations. Because, as one commenter on Geekculture notes, the U.S. dollar is "doing a post-modernist impression of the last minutes of the Titanic," it makes Apple look like they're gouging when if fact they are not.
