Password reset or off

how do i turn off or reset password protection. Ever since i installed Leopard it will not recognize my password. This f'ing frustrating. I'm trying to install some software and it's not letting me. Is there a easy way out of this?

    During startup have the OS X install disk in & hold down "C" while the computer boots up. You can reset the password when running of the install disk.
