IMO, the most significant differences are screen size, the graphics processor and $$$. If you think the extra $ justifies those two advantages, go for it.

There are also other minor differences such as color, express card slot, Firewire 800, backlit keyboard, LED (15"), slightly faster CPUs.

    Hope it helps.

Check your software's minimum system specifications. Some Adobe apps like PhotoShop and Illustrator don't really care about your graphics card, but some apps do.

MacBooks have integrated graphics that isn't as powerful as a separate card.

MacBook Pros have a separate graphics card.

However, the best thing you can do is max out your RAM. Get the minimum from Apple (too expensive) and then go to OWC or Crucial (both have quality RAM and reasonable prices) and buy as much RAM as you can afford.

My advice would be to stay away from the macbook. I have had nothing but displeasure with mine so far and am considering selling it. My biggest problem with it is the keyboard which has greatly diminished my typing speed and accurancy.... and no you don't get used to it over time. My second major issue has been the lsd screen which cracks if you look at it sideways. I have already suffered it cracking twice! and that is no with hard use by any stretch of the imagination. Next is the sharp edges of the palm rest which dig into your risk very quickly and are quite unpleasant. I also am quite shocked by the poor quality of the lap top case. When I took it apart to replace the earlier mentioned lcd screan I discovered that much of the computer just snaps together or is held together with cheap plastic clips that break or at best get very poorly the 2nd time being put back together. For that they charge for these products I think this is shocking.

I will also add that i am not a mac hater by any stretch of the imagination, I have owned many over the years including two ibooks which I have had none of these problems with( I wish I had one of them now instead of this macbook).

I switched my main computer for a PC to a Mac this spring.

I wasn't totally sure if I wanted to totally abandon the PC world, so I bought a new PC Notebook at the same time I bought my new iMac.

I'm extremely happy with the iMac.

The PC Notebook is good too, but it's still the Windows World, with all the problems.

I've been thinking I'd like to buy a Macintosh Notebook.. but I'd need to save for a long time.

You helped convince me I'd rather save more money for the Macbook Pro.

Um, that's you. I've got a slim Apple Keyboard (essentially the same thing), as well as experience with MacBooks since they were introduced, and the keyboard, if anything, is an improvement over that of traditional notebooks.

Take it from a service tech; you beat it up. Maybe you didn't think so, but you did. No LCD I've ever seen is so fragile that it cracks without some sort of abuse. If an LCD is taken care of, nothing but the occasional cleaning rag should come into contact with it. I can't tell you how many people I've seen, on both the PC and Mac sides, slam their lid closed as soon as they press "Shut Down", and then think it's odd that it broke simply because they never dropped or struck their machine.

I've taken apart countless MacBooks, and have found those clips to be quite sturdy, as well as easily manipulated, in contrast to the iBook, who's bottom case is essentially loosened and then torn off. Also, I hope your warranty was expired before you opened the casing yourself.

Feel free to share your experiences, but try not to actively dissuade someone from a perfectly fine machine. If it were so terrible, it wouldn't sell nearly as well as it does (which, by my estimates, has already far outsold the iBook G4).

actually there are a great number of people who feel that way about the new keyboard design. Sure some like it but a great many don't too. There is a reason that keyboards were and are designed in the traditional way. As I have stated I have owned many macs and all had a better keyboard than this.

This lap top has not recieved any harder use than any of my other's that were still going strong years later

hardly sturdy, half fall off as you take the bezel off and new ones are difficult to get and greatly over priced from mac

No my warrenty hadn't expired but I'm not going to pay macs rediculous prices (over 800 dollars) for a new lcd. Plus with other's experience with repairs don't by mac I frankly didn't trust their techs to touch it.

This is a very poor design, and I find it rediculous that anyone could argue otherwise. It sells well because it has some very nice features on it and it looks good. Unfortunately the whole thing is very much form over function which is not what I want in a lap top... the keyboard exemplifies this, I might add.

FWIW, I have and love my MacBook. Yep, it occasionally has problems, but it is a great little laptop.

For others reading this thread. Don't let one person's rant dissuade you from looking at a MacBook.

    Check it out for yourself.

Oh, and here's a happy tip: If you click on a commenter's name you can see all of their posts. That gives you a clearer view of that person's perspective on things.

I've had my Macbook for about 10 months now. I'm very happy with it. Don't base your decision on the opinion of a pessimist.

Well based on what I'm seeing here so far, mac could shove just about anything down the throats of their enthusiasts and they would swallow it and thank them for it.

Congratulations on posting your fourth message bashing Apple and those of us on the AppleInsider forums.

We look forward to your fifth post.

I prefer the new keyboard layout for laptop usage cause most for me, most laptop keyboard keys are cramped and I make typo much easier, I used my sis MacBook for 1 month plus and my typo reduces. I belive its cause of the keyboard keys. Although I still prefer the normal keyboards for PC users cause it feels comfortable (longer stroke has nice feelings).

I use a MBP at work and have a MB for my personal use. If you are doing graphic design you will probably appreciate the larger screen and enhanced graphics potential of the MBP. Whether you would appreciate spending $700 (or whatever the difference is on the two machines you are comparing) more for them is subjective.

Personally I like my MacBook better because I feel it has a superior keyboard, no latch that can break off, and because of its size (not weight...size...when I am packing a bag with finite space I appreciate the extra room I have with my MB). it is much more portable.

The best thing to do is to go to an Apple Store if there is one near you and sit down with a MBP and a MB and see which one you prefer. There is a lot that goes into this decision beyond tech stats. Forum people can only help you so much.

Yes, exactly. This is what I was getting at above.

Trust no one (queue X-Files theme).

Check it out yourself. One of the nice things about Apple Stores is that almost all of the Macs have the Adobe programs loaded on them so you can see how they respond. I believe you can also bring some of your own files on a CD/DVD to try out on the Macs as well.

Bottom line is to check it out for yourself and use the info you get here as you see fit.

IMHO, it all comes down to money vs power. The MacBook will _work_ for anything you want to do. It may take from fractions of a second to minutes longer to get the job done, but it will do the job.

I'm in the same situation as peteynice - MacBook at home MBP at work. Coincidentally, I got both within the last month. As others have mentioned, there are definitely ergonomic differences - screen size, weight, keyboard. I've noticed the sharp edges on the MacBook, too, but they don't interfere with my work - but if they hit you wrong I could certainly see them as a source of constant annoyance.

Take a look at battery life, too. I've been pleased with the battery life on both the MB and MBP.

With the money you save buying the MB vs MBP, you could buy a nice Wacom tablet, external monitor, and external HD for backups. So think of the whole package not just the computer.

I just recently stepped into the Mac world with the Macbook Pro 2.2, 15.4".

I have to say, I love this thing! I use it several hours everyday! I was originally going to buy a 2.16 Black Macbook, but my wife talked me into going ahead and spending the extra money on the MBP. Boy o Boy am I glad she did. It is the perfect size for me! Very powerful!

I have only turned my XP box on about 2 times in the last 3 weeks. The 15" MBP is light, slim, powerful, and everything I could hope for! I wish they had a speedier 250GB HDD that I could have added. I went with the 160GB but really would like the extra room of the 250. However, I bought a 500 GB external drive for just over $100 that I use for storage and backup.

So far, so good! I recommend the MBP!
