USB power from last 12" Powerbook model - is it enough to power a hard drive

I've got the last 12" Powerbook model before it was discontinued. I'd like to know if the USB delivers enough power for a portable harddrive that doesn't require a separate power source, such as the Western Digital Passport hard drives.

    I think it depends on the drive as some draw more power than others. My Seagate USB drive couldn't get enough power from the powerbook ports and I had to use 2 ports (the USB drive cable is split into 2 plugs).



    The Macbook, MBP and all the new desktops run it with just one port.



    When looking for a drive, check the power consumption. Mine is 650mA. Aim for under 500mA.



    You can also check out the Lacie firewire powered drives. Firewire supplies more power over a port and so you should easily get away with one cable there and it keeps your USB ports free for external mice:
