I just bought a season of scrubs and some movies and im trying to rip them. Im having trouble getting them right. I have handbrake and mac the ripper. I think i can rip movies ok but im not sure if i should rip them in mp4 or avi. When i try to rip scrubs in handbrake it wasnt working right and then i tried in mac the ripper to rip the episodes separately and it cut parts off. I successfully ripped 1 disc in mac the ripper and its like i have the dvd in the computer i can use the menu and stuff but its more than 7GB and its not even the whole season and i dont know how to make the file smaller. Any ideas? Is there a better program or some changes in settings I can make?

thanks.

mac the ripper only takes out the copyprotection.

this means you get a exact copy (full resolution and all the extras like "making of" and "languages" etc).

thats why its 7gb (and its getting worse in the future - hd-movies are 50-60gb).

    what you could try is:

    -leaving out extras

-compressing the movie (loss of resolution)

    handbreak can do that.

What is your intended use for the video? For an iPod, computer, AppleTV? If all you are wanting to do is clone the DVD over to your hard drive to watch later, and you have the disk space, there is nothing inherently wrong with maintaining a bunch of VIDEO_TS folders that you then watch with the DVD player. Ever since I got AppleTV, I have been using handbrake to compress those VIDEO_TS folders to M4V files that I can then load into iTunes. Works great, looks awesome.

When I rip TV shows, I use handbrake to encode each title separately. Using the AppleTV preset in Handbrake, a half-hour episode uses about 400 megabytes. This would be less if the compression is a bit more aggressive, using say the iPod preset.

I tried just ripping the episodes with mactheripper and handbrake but it doesnt get whole episodes it gets like the middle and end of one and then the beginning of the next. Is there a way to fix that?

I only did my first RIP ever last night for 3 DVDs. I used MacTheRipper for extraction, and then Toast8 for burning, which also compressed the data to fit on a DVD. Of course, it copies everything, including trailers for upcoming features. Tested in my DVD player and worked great.
