I was planning on getting a portable hard drive and I was wondering if you can allot space to Time Machine or do you need to partition the drive? I want to use part for backup and part for storage.

I have Time Machine backing up to a Partition on an External 160GB HD.
I first partitioned the drive, than unplugged the drive (it's USB) and then plugged it back in and Time Machine asked me if I would like to back up to it, I said Yes, then it let me pick which partition I wanted it to Back-up to.
Easy as that.
It works just fine for me, been backing up for two weeks now

Do it either way. TM creates a folder where it stores the data.

Just my two cents,
