MacBook or MacBook Pro (again;))

I know it's been asked A LOT but I guess my case is a little different.

I am a college student so I get a discount from Apple. I was going to buy a MacBook with 2GB memory (because I mentally throw slow computers out the window). Because of this addition, it would come out to be about $1,500. Now a 15 inch mackbook pro already has enough memory and comes out to be $1,800. Should I spend the extra $300 for a Pro?

I would be using it for college..nothing heavy, though I'd love to use Photoshop. I want to watch videos..etc. I also love big resolutions and a lot of room on my screen, but I can live without it (my windows laptop is pretty small but I think I am ready to thow it at whoever made this piece of junk). I hear Pro can run recent games really well (is that for real???) I used to be a gamer but haven't played in a while. If I will be able to play a little Halo or something on the weekend, it's be great (but again, SO NOT REQUIRED).

I will be carrying whatever I buy to lectures every day.

I will go to an Apple store to get a sense for what I like best, but not going to ask questions because we all know that people want to sell you more expensive stuff

Is Pro an overkill?

if you want to play games, get the pro. I play games. I was using crossover which is a program that allows you to run some windows programs in the mac os, but it's shit, so get a copy of windows and install it on bootcamp. The pro comes with a pretty nice video card, which is good for gaming. I play counterstrike 1.6, source, and that's about it right now. Source runs amazingly smooth on it. Not only does it run games amazingly, it runs windows much better than a pc does as well. It is seriously the fastest pc i've used. If you want more resolution, get the pro as well.

All in all, the pro is the machine for me, it's fast, and it runs very well with leopard and xp professional. But it all depends on you.

What degree are you doing? Bachelor of Arts? unless you're doing something incredibly specialised there is really no need for MacBook - for me, I"m studying Religious Studies (Bachelor of Arts at Canterbury), meaning, the MacBook does everything I need.

Thought I'd make your decision tougher for you. Have you considered a refurbished MBP for $1699?

Meh, I used to go refurbished, but given bad experiences in the past, I tend to go for 'new' these days; considering he will be at uni; 'my laptop stopped working' will not be a valid excuse for not handing his assignment in on time.
