Hi, I just got Age of Empires 3 for mac and wanted to make a backup dvd of it, in case I lose the original. I was wondering how I could do this.

What I tried and was unsuccessful at was making a dmg of it and then burning the dmg onto a blank dvd using disk utility.

Thanks

You need a program that makes a binary image of the disc. There are ways to do this with open source apps via the terminal, but if you're not into that then you'll have to splash for some payware.

I'm fine using terminal, so can anyone point me in the right direction for this sort of app?

Also on a g5 1.8 GHz how long do you think this would take?

I just kind of figured out how to do it, but had to use a shareware app, and had to put a large file on my HD.

    What I did was

    Downloaded (Firestarter FX)

Went to the burn data section and saved the disk as an iso. Next I burned it to a blank DVD. and it worked, but what I figured out was the only way for it to open the game was to leave the iso on my hard drive (anywhere) or else I would get a message saying that the original dvd of the game wasnt inserted. So if i ever lost my original dvd, all i would have to do is make an iso of the copy dvd, leave it on my hard drive and it would work fine.

I still would rather find a way to not have to put a 3 GB iso on my HD though.

Unless you have two DVD drives, this is impossible to begin with. What you tried before (DMG) also buffers an image to the hard disk.

I'm guessing he meant that he didn't want to KEEP a big .iso on the drive. It sounds like he knows it'll need to be there during the copy process, but wants to be able to delete it after creating the backup DVD.

Exactly, I dont care about having an iso on my HD during the process, I just want to be able to delete it and still play the game, which is why i'm looking for a way to duplicate the dvd so my computer thinks the backup is the original disk.

For some reason, the game doesn't recognize the backup disk as the original, unless I leave the iso on my hard drive, and that is the problem I'm trying to solve.

Then get a tool that makes binary duplicates. Toast, I'm pretty sure, can do this.
