well, actually I don't understand what it does exactly....

It sounds like it plays movies on your tv but plays them from your computer???

Is the apple tv just some bridge between your computer and your tv?

What if you already have a computer hooked up to your tv? is the apple tv a waste then?

    Bingo!... although it does have 40 or 160 GB of storage, so it CAN act independent of the computer (though a computer/iTunes is necessary to set it up initially.) And it is pretty limited as to which file formats it can handle (without "hacking" it.)

    It was a good first attempt, but I really think it should have been updated by now to make it a more realistic product.

    With AppleTV you are not seeing the display of your computer in your living room but rather you sync or stream content from your computer to the AppleTV in your living room. You can think of AppleTV as a big iPod that is permanently connected to a TV.

    AppleTV can sync (copy content and store it locally) from 1 computer and stream (only view content) from up to 5 computers.

    You can only sync iTunes content from your computer(s), but you can ripp DVDs into iTunes and sync it to AppleTV. Your content need to first be in iTunes before it gets to AppleTV. With AppleTV you can also sync your pictures and view them in a much more convenient way in your living room.

    You have limited storage (40GB or 160GB) locally on the AppleTV but your main storage repository is really your computer. In iTunes you can control what content will be synced to the AppleTV much like you do for an iPod.

    With AppleTV you can see some content directly from the internet:

    * movie and song previews from ITNS

    * view and search for clips in youtube

    and, most important, the interface is VERY simple and convenient to use. You don't need to be a computer or gadget freak to operate it.

    The major limitations that I see in AppleTV (note that most relate to the iTNS service and not the AppleTV device itself):

    * almost no HD content in ITNS

    * no rental for video content in ITNS

    * limited local storage

    * no wifi iTunes Store like iPhone/Touch. Content always need to get to the computer
