Insider information about the SDK anyone ?
Hi,
I have already posted this on other MAC forums, so I apologize if you have already read me there.
I thought I'd try my luck with this thread on getting new informations regarding the SDK for the iPhone and the iPod Touch.
First, a reminder for everyone.
Here is the exclusive article published in Electronista on November 26th that is the reason behind this thread:
"Some developers are gaining early access to Apple's iPhone and iPod touch software developer kit, according to reliable sources speaking to Electronista. A handful of companies are said to be getting rough versions of the tools to help code more advanced applications than would be possible with the current web-only solution. Exact details of what the kit allows are unknown, though it is confirmed that it produces native programs and somewhat resembles Google's OpenSocial in that it mediates between the programmer and the iPhone operating system.
Although treated as a welcome development, the SDK will not be the same as writing a Mac OS X application and has its clear limits, people familiar with the matter say. These details are unavailable, though the features are broad enough that at least one major social networking site is reportedly interested what the native platform can offer versus existing web code. The group of companies has only received its development tools within the past two weeks and is allegedly unable to provide a timetable for when finished software will be ready, though it should be well ahead of the community at large, which only receives the SDK in February.
The slip corroborates remarks made by Apple chief Steve Jobs in his open letter announcing the SDK, which emphasized the need for a unique solution to third-party software that balances features with a layer of protection against privacy invasion and security breaches."
I know we are many to be waiting for this SDK to start programming lots of apps.
So far on other forums, I have learned from someone who have had access to the SDK, that it will based on Cocoa and not exclusively Java as the article suggested.
But does that mean that we can start working with Xcode without having to rewrite everything when they finally release it ?
So if everyone has insider news about the SDK, like those lucky developers who have received the early version, please let us know.
For everyone else, feel free to ask more questions here.
Thanks

I don't know where you got the idea it would be Java based. It could be Javascript based, like Mac OS X Dashboard code, it which case it'll be a modified version of Dashcode. Otherwise, it'll be Cocoa based with Xcode, Interface Builder, and the like.

iPeon,
Thanks for your help, but I don't see anything new on Apple's developer.
Since this summer, the site has been dedicated to Ajax programming for the iPhone.
Did you see something new that could give me answers, or did you think that we didn't know about this site ?
THT,

Well, Google Social API is based on Javascript, so if the article compares Apple's SDK to Google's, then I only assumed this should be considered.

This is what my thread is all about. Knowing which one it is going to be.
I think that Apple has realised that if they come up with a Dashcode like SDK, then they will create a real disappointment amongst developers. ... for the second time.
We all hope it is Cocoa based and I am almost sure it will be, but I would like to know if someone has had a chance to look at the the beta version of the SDK and what the restrictions are compared to Xcode on MACs.
Any real new information would be very welcome.

The Android API is based on Java, with a clean-room clone (called Dalvik) of the Java VM at that. Meaning Sun isn't really attached to the project. Once one hears Java, one should suspect the project is half-doomed.
Javascript, no relation to Java whatsoever, is a webscripting language, though you should know that. A Javascript SDK from Apple is a possibility since one can do a lot with it, albiet not for responsive applications on iPhone class hardware.

Well, I doubt many developers who have seen the early versions of the SDK will be talking. One would hope it is Cocoa based though.
