Appreciate Advice on Portable Hard Drives

Because of the size and convenience (not planning on using an A/C Adapter), I am considering the purchase of an external portable hard drive.



I would prefer one having Firewire verses USB 2.0, but I have seen any.



I have heard that using a portable hard drive without an A/C adapter will be very draining on the MacBook battery. Has anyone experience this problem?



I have also heard that voltage can be an issue with portable hard drives. Has anyone heard or experienced this problem?



Any brand recommendations for those that are using a portable hard drive?
