Killer OS X Apps

What are the apps that only run on OS X (no photoshop or office here) that will make you upgrade. Mine are iPhoto and Watson... are there any others? I'm still in 9 so I don't know but I would like to know of more apps...

Well, when (if?) Omniweb finally is ready for prime time it will be a great browser - a real "killer app"!

(but it need to be more stable and have better support for java, java-script etc.)

It's not a "killer-app" but the DVD player is so much better in Mac OS X than in Mac OS 9 (for those it matters to)

I have OSX on my iBook, I go to my iMac, when I want excitement. Write now I can't even think of anything that's acceptable. iMovie two crashes when it sees an OS 7 sound file, they worked fine in OS 9 and Apple keeps hiding the sound files somplace different in each new upgrade. Plus it takes forever to launch. iPhoto is cool but hardly a killer app. I spend a lot of time in OSX wishing I was on my other machine. Things that suck in OSX.

    1. Diablo II

    2. newsgroups

    3. cu-seeme

    4. file management ( try moving a file from a student id to your admin account for viewing)

    5. installing software

    6. adding plugins or sound files to iMovie

    7. no sound conversion apps

    8. no Photoshop

Almost everything I do is not as good in OSX as it was in 9. Steve thinks he's 3/4 of the way there. I don't think he's half way there yet.

    Things better in OSX

    1. stability

    2. user accounts ( harder to use but more secure)

    3. airport ( the only thing I can think of that works better in OSX)

    4. I actually like the mail program.

There is a basis for growth, but it's still gotta long way to go. OSX is good for newbies or people who don't know any better, but it still needs good apps. If there is a killer app for it someone send me a copy, because i haven't seen it.

For me OS X is reason in itself to upgrade. It runs all my apps either natively or in classic layer. And it is so stable. I can run X Windows and all the apps that have been ported for free. I love OnmiWeb. Fire is one of the main apps that I cannot do without, and the latest version is a huge improvement. The Gimp is the main X Windows app that works well for me. The built in firewall in OS X is a great feature, as is the built in Apache, and Samba. All of this made possible by OS X's unix roots for the most part. Probably not exactly what you are looking for, but it is what I use it for among other things.

You're right, OS X is the killer app in itself; which explains why I use it even though most of my computing involves Pro Tools and Adobe Pagemill.

OS 9 seems buggy and messy now; and IT MAKES MP3s SKIP. Eugh.

Edit: oh yeah, and Space Tripper is native now

The Gimp is a motivating factor for me...no sense in paying 700 bucks for PhotoShop when I can get everything I need in the Gimp for free.

iPhoto certainly isn't 'killer' but it's ok..

Oh yeah, Interface Builder is killer

There's not too many OS X-only apps out there yet. Everything is either Carbon or Classic.

I just got Office v.X yesterday, and I'm enjoying it. I was glad to finally dump OS X's Mail app and get back to Outlook Express (now Entourage). Mail shows a lot of promise, and it has features I like, such as Bounce and Redirect and toolbar customization; however, it's still quite buggy, it doesn't always display HTML emails properly, and the Rules are so underpowered as to be useless. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

My only complaints about Office so far are that the toolbar icons look large and cartoonish...I find myself hunting around to do stuff I already knew how to do because everything looks so different (guess I just have to get used to it). Second, developers are really overdoing it on the use of white and grey in their windows. Open up Word, Excel, and Entourage, and it's a little disorienting because everything is white and grey. I wish there was a way to tint the toolbars like you could in Internet Explorer for OS 9.
