My Fantasy AppleTV
Here's what I would love to see in an AppleTV:
- All the current AppleTV functionality.
- A high quality Blu-ray player (upgradable to BD Live.)
- HDMI 1.3.
- A CableCARD slot, and a tasty Apple interface for browsing cable channels.
- DVR
That's a tasty all-in-one STB. I'd fork over cash for that.

Why does everyone want Blu-Ray capabilities? The future is digital distribution not physical media.

For high quality HD, digital downloads are a long ways off yet.

Because digital video distribution isn't here YET... especially HD.
So... if they're gonna put an optical drive in it (and they should), might as well go with one that'll play HD (and Blu-Ray seems to be the winner there.)

Is it so hard to think that people may want to condense the number of devices hooked to their TV?
Does digital distribution help you access your current collection of content that you've already paid for and haven't the time or space to rip and store on HDD?
Is it mind shattering to consider the usefulness of an optical (Blu Ray or not) drive being added to the aTV?
I'd love to live in this utopian future of VOD but here in the present there are too many hurdles and compromises.
HDMI 1.3
1080p playback support
True 5.1 audio support
BD drive
Wi-Fi iTunes Store
IPTV support
All for $399
Support for standard def televisions without hacks
Improved codec support, including syncing with iTunes
TV tuner, or allow one to be plugged into the USB port
Plugin architecture opened up
CAM slot
I'm not moving to HD for a while. There's not much content around, over the air or on cable. HD media hasn't taken off yet. So while I'm sticking with a standard def TV for the forseeable future, I would love easier access to my digital media.

Exactly.
1. HD optical media player (DVD, Blu-ray, etc.)
2. AppleTV
3. Game box
4. Cable/satellite TV
5. PC for HDTV etc.
That's too much. All those cables and all those settings. It's a mess only Apple could clean up.
