OS X Leopard disk utility allows resize without data loss where possible. From the online help.

    Quote:

    Partitioning a disk

Partitioning a hard disk divides it into sections called “volumes.” Each volume appears as a separate hard disk. In the Partition pane, you can choose how to partition a disk, change a volume’s size, and change the number of volumes on a disk.

    Enlarging a volume

You may be able to increase a volume’s size without erasing its data by erasing another volume and combining them.

    Enlarging a volume

    Creating new volumes

You may be able to create new volumes on a disk without erasing any of its data by creating new volumes from the unused space in the existing volumes.

    Reusing a hard disk

If you want to reuse a hard disk, you can partition it, which erases all of its data and creates new volumes. To partition a startup disk, you must first restart your computer from another disk, such as your Mac OS X Install disc.

You can easily partition hard drive on Mac and you can run Mac OSX and windows. Partition may take long time but there are long term gains associated with it. You system partition Mac is the one that handles the harder work and it has the space to do on its own.

It simple makes data optimization and backup easier. This makes entire operation interesting and easier. Without erasing you can easily partition Mac hard drive.
