I currently have an Imac Intel core duo 667Mhz, with a Gig of Ram. Two days ago I turned my machine off for a few hours. When I went to reboot it, there was a briefcase with a question mark (?) on it. I rebooted the machine and it came up fine. I used it for the past two days without any prblem. Earlier today, I turned it off and cleaned the work area. When I went toreboot it, the same thing happened.

Once again, I rebooted and it came up. Any idea what is going on. I am running Leopard and have Parallel on this machine as well. (version 3). I haven't had any problems prior to three days ago, so Im at a lost for what is hapening. Please advise or comment.

Thanks

Hmmm, a briefcase with a question mark.... Perhaps your iMac is giving you a subtle hint to go to MWSF. Or not. I've never heard of this before. Good luck. You can always call Apple Support to see what they think.

Do you have an Intel iMac (667MHz would be somewhat low speed for them, I think they start at 1.8 GHz) or an old PowerPC iMac (they had the 667MHz model)?

I have an PowerPC (PPC) iBook, and sometimes, right after the famous Startup Sound, I see a briefcase with a question mark over it. It doesn't last long, and I think it only means that you Mac is searching for the OS to boot from. Nothing to worry about, but check your S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities/ Disk Utility).

And if it's an old PPC iMac, check more often maybe, my iBook's S.M.A.R.T. status varies sometimes (and the hard disk already made screaming noises (it ran for 3 years, almost continuously)).

But if you have an Intel iMac, I have never seen a briefcase before (Intel Alu iMac) during startup.

Even with BootCamp and one external drive with MacOS on it.

    Could you make a photo?

And what Mac do you have (speed, RAM, HDD, year of construction)?
