Anyone who has ever stood in the line knows that there is a VIP line that gets to go in first.
It's a perfectly valid question - who are these assholes? I know one year Ellen Feiss was on the front row. So it must be various big-wigs.

what i could tell from last year there were three main brackets in the audience. Apple engineers and the like, high paying guests and low paying guests. Apple engineers who actually worked on the iphone sat in the very front, i think even phil schiller sat there from what i could tell when he accepted the call. next are people who paid for VIP status, like $1000 bucks or so and yes they get the quick line. And then there was the rest of us who paid a min $250 and flooded everywhere else. I'm unaware of any assholes or freeloaders, but I may be mistaken.
Maybe this isn't a dead topic but I'm still a bit by the sion.
I've been to every keynote I can remember for the last 8 years. I can tell you that special treatment is VERY HARD TO COME BY. You wait in line unless you are "keynote staff" regardless of your status at Apple (excluding VPs, or personal invites from Steve) I know people who personally worked on the iPhone, Leopard, and some upcoming stuff, and they can't get TICKETS for the keynote, nor can they hook me up. Usually MacWorld will give out press passes to the keynote to big companies if you ask early enough, but usually I just suck it up and buy a ticket every year. You go wait in line around 4am, or earlier, but you'll get a halfway decent seat most likely. The first 5-6 rows are usually taken with Apple + friends of Steve. Real press is of to the left standing...
You'll meet Apple employees waiting in line, pretending to be normal because they often are asked not to waste keynote space.
With my limited connections I usually know what's coming out before most of the people who WORK inside Apple on high level projects know what's at the keynote.
It's really surprising to many...
Oh and if you didn't wait in line, you didn't buy a ticket. Example the CEO of sharper image was VIP, he didn't wait in line, nor do they pay for tickets that's invite only. The idiots who spend $1000 on tickets, only wait in a slightly shorter line.... and honestly I just move up after I'm already seating often sitting in front of people who paid $1000 for a ticket.
As one of these "Assholes" in the past... I can tell you how I got in, and who was around me for the 2000 MacWorld keynote. At the time i was working for a university bookstore doing Apple sales (well running the computer and software side of the store). Apple had just started a "secret shopper" program, and our store was secret shopped and I happen to be the person who the shopper talked with, since we won (out of a few hundred stores) for best EDU store sub 20k (i think that is the size limit we won in) in enrollment, my manager and I were flown to MacWorld and got VIP access to MacWorld.
Sure we were wined and dined at the campus but really, the only MacWold extras we got were entry into the keynote early and coffee/tea and snacks before the keynote. Who else was there... well we were in row 3, in row 1 and 2 where Microsoft, FileMaker, Adobe, etc. their lead programers mostly. Woz and other VIPs, etc. were in row 1 center and row 1 left. I do have to say other then a lack luster keynote it was fun to see and talk with the lead programers at MS and other retail VIPs (and yes walk past that long line to get in and a nice seat). Will that happen again for me, like was just said, they are hard to come by so i don't expect it to happen.
Can someone please send a helicopter to downtown new york and pick me up?? Then fly me to laguardia to hop aboard their corporate jet and fly me to san francisco like......now??
Oh, and send the secret service to the airport to pick me up and escort me in a limo with a full motorcade to the moscone center where there would be a front row seat waiting for me..........ok?
EDIT: And after the keynote lunch with Steve Jobs N crew would be great too. Then the motorcade escorts me back to the airport to fly me back to NY with helicopter ride back to work.
I'm not kidding!! Somebody better start fueling that chopper!!
